Key West Higgs Beach is the perfect Caribbean-style beach on the south shore of the island
Isn’t it amazing how a warm sunny day at the beach in Key West can bring out the kid in all of us? You’ll undoubtedly find yourself entertaining a childlike urge to run into the water … sand between your toes … sunshine warming your body. Fact is - any season, winter, spring, summer, or fall, is the perfect time to do this in tropical Key West, the ideal place to tap into the child part of us that still yearns for spontaneity and fun.
Key West has several beaches to choose from, some right on the island, others just off-shore but close by. Pack a picnic and pick your beach for a memorable day of play that will make you know you’re somewhere in the Caribbean.
During the summer, the water is especially warm and making it delightful to float in complete relaxation. Anytime of year, put on a swim mask and fins, and swim around the piers and rocks and see the fish swimming up close. At Higgs Beach, walk out on to the White Street Pier with a swimming pole and try your hand at catching some fish. You'll nearly always see experience fishermen and women out catching fish.
Rent a kayak or paddle board and enjoy paddling out and looking back at the beach. When you're tired and hungry, stop in at Salute Restaurant on Higgs Beach for a snack, lunch, or just cold drinks. When you're at South Beach stop in at the Southernmost Cafe. You'll find food and drinks nearby every Key West beach. Be sure to bring you sunscreen, as the sun is intense anytime of year. It's also fun to bring a picnic. A beach umbrella or beach tent is lots of fun to curl up in. Take a nap in the shade to the sounds of the sea as you drift back into your inner child state of mind.
